Volunteer Coordinator

A part-time fixed-term contract for an Independent Contractor, running 22 weeks: May 22 to October 22, 2022 inclusive.

Compensation: $17 an hour
Hours: 10 hours per week – with 7 of those hours spent working on Saturdays in person at the farmers’ market (June 5-October 16). The rest spread over the week working from home.
Responsible to: Market Manager

Withrow Park Farmers’ Market in North Riverdale is an upbeat outdoor farmers’ market that is growing neighbourly connections, community vitality and a local sustainable economy. The market is open every Saturday 9am to 1pm, rain or shine, from June 4 to October 15, 2022.  

We’re looking for a Volunteer Coordinator to manage our volunteer program, who will work closely with our Market Manager.   

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Manage the volunteer program: recruit, schedule and support volunteers every week, ensuring key volunteer tasks are always covered
  • Be first point of contact for new and returning volunteers
    Oversee that the coffee tent and other volunteer-run activities are running smoothly
  • Act as an ambassador at the market
  • Assist the Market Manager and volunteer team efficiently set-up and tear down the market
  • Supervise any market activities that are being conducted by the volunteer team
  • Manage administration and communication related to the volunteer program 
  • Provide additional support to the Market Manager as requested; logistical support, promoting the farmers market, preparations for special activities, maintaining market equipment 
  • Ensure the volunteer team and market operations are following all public health protocols and guidelines

Requirements

  • Must be available to work every Saturday, 7am to 2pm from June 4 to October 15 inclusive
  • Must be able to work outdoors on Saturdays, in all weather conditions
  • Administratively self-sufficient: a mobile phone with your own plan; and access to a computer and internet for home working 
  • Physical ability to lift bins, put up tents and pull loaded carts
  • Valid Food Handlers certification, or willingness to obtain (market will pay for certificate)

Beneficial Experiences and skills

  • Experience managing volunteers or projects
  • Experience successfully completing tasks in a time-crunched environment
  • Experience using Google suite of products, including Google docs and spreadsheets
  • Experience developing task lists
  • Experience with client-facing work
  • Great people management skills (good at delegating tasks, helping people feel valued, energizing groups and managing conflict)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
