Seed Librarian – Volunteer Role Description 

Withrow Park Farmers’ Market is an upbeat outdoor community featuring fresh, local and sustainably grown foods and environmentally focused initiatives. The market is open every Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm, rain or shine, from June to mid-October and serves the wider Riverdale community. 

We’re currently looking for volunteers to help at our Community Seed Library as “Seed Librarians” on Saturdays. The seed library allows community members to give, take and share seeds with one another while also helping to promote urban agriculture, pollinator-friendly habits and biodiversity. A little gardening experience is helpful but mostly just an interest and willingness to learn!

We are looking for folks that are interested in creating simple workshops and demonstrations related to seed saving and gardening to help animate the Seed Library space (Example: how to harvest seeds from various plants). In addition to volunteering at the market in-person there will be some time spent at home to create these activities.

Responsibilities on market day includes:

  • Setting up or packing away the Seed Library (depending if you are the morning or afternoon shift) 
  • Receive seed donations from community members and assure they are labelled and packaged correctly
  • Keep the Seed Library organized and tidy 
  • Engage in conversations and answer basic questions about seeds and gardening
  • Create signage and promotional material to share information
  • Host simple workshops or demonstrations related to seed saving and gardening

Duration: Saturdays from June to October 2022

Ideally you’re available for 5-10 of the 20 Saturdays between June 4 to October 15, 2022. If you’re interested in this role but can’t commit to 5-10 Saturdays, please get in touch and let us know your availability.

Some at-home tasks could include organizing and planning activities, demonstrations, or workshops, updating our seed inventory spreadsheet, and creating social media posts. 

Time: 8am to 11:15am and/or 10:45am to 2pm
