Fall Seed Saving Workshop

September 10, 2022 @ 9:00 am - 12:30 pm

We’re celebrating Urban Agriculture Week with drop-in-style workshops! Our workshop will explain how to save seeds of vegetables that you can harvest in the Fall, such as pumpkins, squash, garlic, root vegetables, cabbage, kale, and brussels sprouts. We will also demonstrate how to save your own tomato seeds through a fermentation process. Market visitors will learn how to do this and then take seeds home in a jar to complete the process. A great activity for kids!

A second activity will look at saving seeds from native pollinator plants you can find in your garden. These seeds can be scattered in the Fall as the frost and snow will help prepare these seeds to germinate in spring. We’ll talk about the importance of these plants as habitats and food sources for butterflies, bees and other pollinators.

Both presentations will give some tips on seed saving and storage while learning why saving seeds is important in the first place. Folks are also welcome to bring seeds to share from their home or take seeds for free from our Community Seed Library.

Volunteers from Toronto Master Gardeners will be in attendance on September 17 to answer any gardening questions and provide information about native plants that are good for your garden. While at the farmers market, be sure to also visit the participants from our Urban Grower Project

The workshops and our Seed Library are located at the farmers’ market. A map of the market can be found on our website landing page here: withrowmarket.ca
