The Board of Directors at the Centre for Local Food Initiatives (CLFI) is looking for new Committee Members! CLFI is the governing body of the Withrow Park Farmers’ Market.  We’re seeking enthusiastic and qualified community members to join one of three committees: finance, policy, or market operations. The committees are a mix of CLFI board directors and members. CLFI is a registered non-profit, and volunteer operated. Finance Committee member

finance committeeLOOKING FOR: One or two committee members to join two Board members on the finance committee
TIME COMMITMENT: A monthly meeting and 2-4 hours a month outside the meeting
APPOINTMENT TERMS: Two years
START DATE: January 2020

The finance committee works to ensure the organization has strong financial record-keeping and reporting processes, that Board members understand the organization’s financial health, and that the organization is in good financial standing. The committee does this by:

  • Developing an annual operating budget
  • Monitoring adherence to the budget
  • Setting financial goals along with funding strategies to achieve them
  • Developing financial reporting forms and processes
  • Creating financial policies 
  • Overseeing or undertaking financial record-keeping

PREFERRED COMPETENCIES: 

  • Knowledge and experience: Must have a clear understanding of financial matters; ideally, would have financial or business experience
  • Leadership skills 
  • Integrity 
  • Effort: The willingness to put in the time and effort to be a productive committee member
  • Competence: The willingness and the ability to learn to read financial statements, understand grants and contracts, and comprehend the fiscal operation of the organization

 

Policy Committee member

policy committeeLOOKING FOR: One or two committee members to join three existing Board members on the Policy Committee
TIME COMMITMENT: In the short-term, a bi-monthly meeting and 1-2 hours a month outside the meeting. Once the policies are set, the time commitment will be reduced, with at least one yearly meeting to review the Policy Manual. However, the Committee will meet as needed, based on workload requirements (i.e., development of new policies as needed).
APPOINTMENT TERMS: Two years
START DATE: January 2020

The Policy Committee is a standing committee of the Board of Directors (the Board) of the Centre for Local Food Initiatives (CLFI). The Committee acts as a knowledge resource, providing counsel to the Board in the area of policy, legislation, and regulations as they relate to nonprofit governance and legislation, food security, and farmers’ markets. The Policy Committee’s role is advisory; authority for decisions remains with the Board. The Policy Committee works to ensure the organization has strong policies and is able to respond to external legislative or policy events that would affect its operations. The Committee does this by:

  • Taking responsibility for the CLFI policy manual – ensuring it is sufficiently comprehensive and adhering to relevant legislation;  
  • Identifying, evaluating and making recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding policy, legislation, and regulatory issues to be addressed by the organization; and
  • Providing advice on policy issues. 

PREFERRED COMPETENCIES: 

  • Knowledge and experience: Must have a good understanding of relevant policy issues associated with running a nonprofit and being an employer
  • Leadership skills: Members must demonstrate leadership qualities 
  • Communication skills: Members should be able to clearly present their opinions, ideas, and concerns at Committee meetings and beyond
  • Effort: The willingness to put in the time and effort to be a productive committee member

 

Operations Committee member

operations committeeLOOKING FOR: One or two committee members to join two existing Board members, plus the Market Manager, on the Operations Committee.
TIME COMMITMENT: Over the winter and spring, a bi-monthly meeting and 2-3 hours a month outside the meeting. Once the market season starts (June), one meeting per month, until the end of the season (October), and 4 hours per month outside of the meetings.
APPOINTMENT TERMS: Two years
START DATE: January 2020

The Operations Committee supports the governance of CLFI, board functions and market operations by working to ensure the organization has effective operational guidelines and direction, and is able to respond to changes and circumstances that would affect its operations. The Committee does this by:

  • Taking responsibility for the successful planning and operations of CLFI projects i.e. summer market and winter market
  • Ensuring stakeholder groups’ needs are met through evaluation, monitoring, and receiving feedback
  • Consider inclusivity in all of our projects 
  • Follow CLFI directives and mandates

PREFERRED COMPETENCIES: 

  • Knowledge and Experience: Must have a clear understanding of community engagement and local issues 
  • Communication skills: Members should be willing to present their opinions, ideas, and concerns clearly at committee meetings and beyond
  • Innovative skills: Members should bring creative ideas, be willing to think of solutions outside of the box, and share their enthusiasm for the projects
