SUMMARY:How to Plant Garlic Workshop
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating Ontario Garlic Week with a garlic planting workshop at our Community Seed Library on Saturday\, October 1. Our Seed Librarians will teach visitors how to plant garlic in their backyards. Participants will get to take home a few cloves to plant! The garlic cloves are generously donated by Toronto Garlic Festival. \nThis is a drop-in style workshop. Visit our Seed Library tent anytime between 9am to 1pm. (Market Map is located on our homepage) \n \nFrom repelling vampires to curing illness\, to making the perfect pesto\, garlic has storied history making it a staple in our kitchens today. Garlic is a part of the Alliaceae (onion family) and is closely related to chives\, leeks\, and shallots. These plants all grow from a bulb that is planted underground; initially pushing up a stalk or scape and resulting in a head with several individual cloves. \nGarlic is a perennial crop that is planted in the Fall in our climate and is harvested the following summer. In the Spring\, cut the Garlic Scapes so that the plant will put its energy into producing a larger bulb. If the Garlic Scape is left to flower and produce bulbils (seeds) you’ll have a smaller garlic bulb. Garlic Scapes are edible so by cutting them you’ll get to enjoy two harvests! \nFor our colder climate\, hardnecked garlic varieties are the heartiest. Always choose local and organic varieties for the best result. Garlic does better directly sowed in the ground and doesn’t suit container growing. To plant\, gently separate the individual bulbs; being careful to maintain the skin. Plant each bulb with the pointy side up\, 2-5 cm /1-2 inches in depth approximately 10-15 cm or 4-6 inches apart. Cover with a mulch like leaves to protect the bulbs over winter. Plant garlic between September and the end of November and keep in mind that each clove will produce its own garlic plant!

SUMMARY:Send a kid to camp!
DESCRIPTION:Lonny’s Smile is an amazing local organization that helps send kids with congenital heart disease to camp. The camp gives kids a chance to forget about their illness for a week and experience the magic of summer camp\, at zero cost to their families.\n\n\n\n  \nUnfortunately\, the camp was closed for the past two summers due to Covid so being able to reopening this summer is even more impactful because of the isolation these kids have had during the pandemic.\n\n\n\n  \nVisit Withrow Market this Saturday\, September 17 and help send a kid with congenital heart disease to camp! ❤️ Visit the Lonny’s Smile tent for fun kids activities and face painting. Many of our vendors have also provided products with proceeds or a portion of proceeds going to Lonny’s Smile and sending kids to camp.\n\n\n\n  \nlonnyssmile.org\ninstagram.com/lonnys.smile

SUMMARY:Basics of Hot Composting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:BASICS OF HOT COMPOSTING\nSean Smith\, Crooked Farmz\nThursday\, Sept. 15\n6:00-8:00pm\nCarrot Common Green Roof\nfree/pwyc\n\nRSVP by email to Priya Jain: priya@carrotcommon.com\n\n–\nBASICS OF HOT COMPOSTING will be a two-part workshop covering the basics of creating ‘hot compost’ to improve soil health organically\, using techniques relevant for the urban context. The first part will discuss different types of composters; the all-important carbon/nitrogen (C:N) ratio; aeration and moisture; feedstocks and amendments; soil microbes\, worms\, and other non-human partners. The second part of the workshop will be a live demonstration and hands-on opportunity to practice the principles discussed earlier\, using the three-bin composting system in the Carrot Green Roof gardens and feedstocks from the surrounding neighbourhood.\n\nIf you intend to participate in the hands-on portion of the workshop\, please wear clothes suitable for the occasion!\n\nThe event is free/pwyc\, with donations going to support future Carrot Green Roof initiatives.\n\n–\nSean Smith is the owner of Crooked Farmz\, a microbrewer of fresh aerobic compost teas for home gardens\, urban farms\, arboriculture\, and landscaping. His interest in developing a local CSA subscription service for composting and compost tea brewing emerges from deeper underlying concerns about soil health\, microbial life\, climate change\, and our relationships with land and water. Crooked Farmz exists as a backyard farm in East York\, a demonstration space at Downsview Park\, and has been recognized for innovation in urban agriculture practice. crookedfarmz.net\n\n–\nAbout the Space: The garden space and compost site is located on the Carrot Green Roof\, a rooftop garden above the Big Carrot Grocery on the Danforth. It is a few minutes from Chester Subway Station.\n\nAccessibility to the Space: Through outdoor staircase\, west of the entrance to The Big Carrot\, with alternative to accessing the roof & gardens from 348 Danforth Avenue entrance\, where an indoor chairlift is available and a ramp leading to the outdoor deck area. A public wheelchair accessible washroom is on the ground floor in The Big Carrot and a private washroom is on the 1st floor. Please note there is also an active beehive in the gardens.\n\n\n–\n\nPlease note\, this event is not in collaboration with Withrow Market\, but Crooked Farmz is one of our amazing vendors so we wanted to share the opportunity with our community.

SUMMARY:Pollinator Week: Seed Bomb Activity with Master Gardeners
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating #pollinatorweek! Did you know that pollinators like bees\, butterflies\, and hummingbirds\, provide 1 out of 3 bites of food we eat? Say thanks by planting native plants\, supporting local farmers\, and educating others about the importance of pollinators!\n\n\nLearn all about pollinators at Withrow Market with a full day of family fun! Toronto Master Gardeners will be joining us to make seed bombs with native flowers and offering gardening advice. The seed bomb activity runs from 9am to 1pm\, while quantities last.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Toronto Master Gardeners\nToronto Master Gardeners are volunteers who share current\, science-based horticultural information with the gardening public: in person\, in print\, via media\, and online. \nThe volunteer Toronto Master Gardeners have been advising and helping solve problems for Toronto gardeners since January 1988. The Toronto Master Gardeners are part of the province-wide Master Gardeners of Ontario Inc. (MGOI). There are 38 local Master Gardener groups in Ontario\, focusing on sustainable gardening information for the public. There are also Master Gardener groups in many provinces\, most states\, and in some international locations. More information may be found on the MGOI website. \ntorontomastergardeners.ca\nfacebook.com/TorontoMasterGardeners\ntwitter.com/torontomgs\ninstagram.com/torontomastergardeners
